For all its flaws, ‘Sword of Trust’ is still a fun little movie. While it has a mix of untapped potential and a stretched plot, it isn’t one that I would say to stay away from - if you stumble across it and have 80 minutes to kill, there are worse things you could be watching. - Chris dos Santos Read Chris' full article... https://www.maketheswitch.com.au/article/review-sword-of-trust-trust-the-cast-not-the-comedy

Trusting a Story

This is a somewhat interesting film about history, about conspiracy theories, and the length that people will go to to support their own claim. So, we have this guy that runs a pawn broker, and one day a couple of girls come in with a sword that is apparently proof that the South won the civil war. Mind you, the existence of a sword really doesn't do all that much, despite the fact that there happens to be a story attached to it. The problem is that the story is all mumbled up as it appears that the person who wrote it wasn't all that sure of it himself. These girls had inherited the sword when their Grandfather died - they were expecting to get the house, but it turns out that it was the subject of a reverse mortgage, which means that the bank ends up getting it (a reverse mortgage, for those who don't know, is a loan the bank makes to you so that you have money to retire on, and they get your house when you die). There also happens to be this kid that spends his time sitting in the shop watching conspiracy videos, so when the girls bring in this sword, he is immediately interested. This is clearly a low budget, independent film, and in part reminds me a lot of Kevin Smith's earlier work. Basically the hero of the story, the owner of the pawn shop, is being challenged as to where his future lies. Sure, he seems pretty content to run the store, and as we find out it was a way to get out of the rock and roll lifestyle that had almost destroyed him in New York. The problem is that the girl that he was involved with has basically followed him down South. It is interesting some of the things that this film explores, such as why people believe the Earth is flat, and how they actually explain it (a 200 ft high wall of ice), and how the pro-rebels refer to the Civil War as the War of Northern Aggression. Of course, there is also the idea of collecting these artifacts and hiding them away, so that the truth might be suppressed. Mind you, the film is entitled 'The Sword of Trust' which suggests that you probably need to actually trust the story that is attached to the sword to actually believe what it is trying to tell you. On the other hand, collecting these artifacts could be a means on preventing the alternate narrative from being developed.Anyway, this film was pretty cool, and in a way I'm actually quite glad that I did end up watching it.
