Plot summary

Since her debut at the age of 18, musician, civil rights campaigner and activist Joan Baez has been on stage for over 60 years. For the now 82-year-old, the personal has always been political, and her friendship with Martin Luther King and her pacifism have shaped her commitment. In this biography that opens with her farewell tour, Baez takes stock in an unsparing fashion and confronts sometimes painful memories.

A good biographical documentary says something interesting about being a person in the world, and this does that job much better than these things usually do. Joan realizes than most singers aren’t inherently interesting.

I knew nothing about Joan Baez’s life and

I knew nothing about Joan Baez’s life and I feel that I came away well informed. Joan also speaks in the film — she is still alive — and shows remarkable energy and openness when talking about and publicly revealing the less positive aspects of her life.
