Plot summary

A Vatican priest discovers Dante's original Divine Comedy manuscript. When asked to authenticate it, writer Nick Tosches steals it, while a parallel story follows Dante's quest to create his masterpiece.

This is a seriously ambitious movie and you’d need to know more about Dante than I to appreciate it. It tries to give Dante’s life/poem in tandem with a current author’s efforts to hijack a manuscript of The Comedy. There’s lots of Dante’s poetry in there too. I’d say: read a bit about him and concentrate.

The movie wasn't what I imagined and it didn't really surprise me.But the idea of the film is good, but maybe it wasn't successful in executing the idea in my opinion.I was deeply disappointed, especially since I used Dante's Divine Comedy for my exam.

However, the constant shifts between Dante’s lifetime and the early 2000s feel confusing. The subplot about stealing Dante’s original manuscript never clearly connects to The Divine Comedy, making its purpose unclear. The scenes set in Dante’s era are visually beautiful, with stunning locations that enhance the atmosphere. In contrast, the modern-day scenes feel like they belong to a different movie. While the screenplay is ambitious, the overall structure is unfocused. The shifting timelines weaken the film’s strongest qualities, and I believe it would have been more effective if it had focused entirely on Dante’s own era. By the end, I was left wondering where The Divine Comedy itself had gone.
