FULL SPOILER-FREE REVIEW @ https://fandomwire.com/father-mother-sister-brother-review/ "Father Mother Sister Brother aims to be a discreet triptych about modern isolation and family bonds, but its rigid structure and aversion to conflict transform it into an exercise in style that empties itself of true content. Purposely monotonous, slow, and repetitive, Jim Jarmusch promises contemplative silence that, unfortunately, becomes a practically null experience, proving that minimalism, when stripped of an emotional or thematic backbone, is merely inertia. A complete letdown." Rating: D+

A mirror of many modern families

It's an ensemble comedy-drama about three alienated families set in modern times in three different countries--Rural New York or Pennsylvania, Dublin, Ireland, and Paris, France. Each 35-minute episode deals with adult children interacting with their seldom-visited parent(s), either in person or after their recent accidental death. The stories are linked by skateboards, water, driving together down the road, and Rolex watches. In every case, the children have awkward, distant relationships with the parent(s) and sometimes with each other."Father Mother Sister Brother" depicts many modern families, who are dominated by uncomfortable silence and polite conversation, with little desire to go deeper. That makes it a sad movie, but easily recognizable for the mirroring it does of your own family relationships. There is no drama, no resolution, no movement--it's just a reflection of modern reality in many families.

FROM GOOD TO OK

The film is divided into three segments of varying quality. It starts strong with Tom Waits in a hilarious role as the father. It continues with Charlotte Rampling's segment as the mother (perhaps the least inspired) and ends with two twin brothers. For me, the film speaks to the human rituals that bring us together, like sitting down at a table and having coffee-universal, secular ceremonies. It explores the affection, lies, and truths that exist in family relationships, the image we create for others, and the profound ignorance we sometimes have about our own families. I think it's an interesting film, although the tone is too languid and quiet, with so many silences, and it's difficult to stay awake in the theater with the lights off and no soundtrack. However it's a good film.
