I didn’t know what this movie was about

I didn’t know what this movie was about before going into but understood pretty quick. This was definitely an interesting movie. The way it’s shot, through the eyes of a white child set in apartheid (then) Rhodesia, does a great job of making you feel for the family (to an extent). You see the loss this family has suffered and their fear during this tumultuous time, but then you’re hit with the reality of their role in what’s going on. The political turmoil, racist attitudes, fear of losing power, and overall changing of times with a new government sets the tone for this family’s future. My heart strings were pulled somewhat but then the mom really leans into her white settler suit and that stops. The acting is incredible, the little girl who plays the main character was so good. Wouldn’t watch again but don’t regret it.

I loved this book twenty years ago. Skirts some delicate issues fairly cleanly.

On the surface this movie is alright, loosely

On the surface this movie is alright, loosely touches on how horrible white people were to Zimbabweans, but for the most part this movie is really lazy and surface level, little character development at all and most are one dimensional. It fails to really capture the true horror of colonisation in southern Africa and the long term damage left behind. The white settlers/gov didn’t just sell their farms and leave, they actively destabilised the country. Obviously this movie is meant to be through the eyes of a white child, but maybe that’s the issue, we can talk about how "regular white people" will ultimately experience the violence that gives them so much wealth and privilege, and that violence they perpetuate bleeds into their own families, but I think it’s a huge stretch to try say this movie actually tried to touch on that, rather it painted the white family as some kind of "victim" to the end of direct white rule over Zimbabwe, these people sold their land and got to immigrate
