Plot summary

Dina, an outspoken and eccentric 49-year-old in suburban Philadelphia, invites her fiancé Scott, a Walmart door greeter, to move in with her. Having grown up neurologically diverse in a world blind to the value of their experience, the two are head-over-heels for one another, but shacking up poses a new challenge. Scott freezes when it comes to physical intimacy, and Dina, a Kardashians fanatic, wants nothing more than to share with Scott all she’s learned about sensual desire from books, TV shows, and her previous marriage. Her increasingly creative forays to draw Scott close keep hitting roadblocks—exposing anxieties, insecurities, and communication snafus while they strive to reconcile their conflicting approaches to romance and intimacy.

This is one of the more unusual documentaries

This is one of the more unusual documentaries I've ever seen, and its appeal for me is hard to describe. I don't think it would work as anything other than a documentary, although I wouldn't be surprised if someone tries to make a theatrical film out of it because it would be a showcase for the actors who would portray Dina and Scott. Not a lot actually happens in the film as we watch them move in together and eventually get married, but it becomes increasingly more fascinating to become part of their world as we watch them interact with each other and those around them. Their honesty and lack of censorship, propelled I imagine by their respective mental challenges, is jarring at first but becomes rather engaging after awhile. The filmmakers allow us to find humor in what we're watching without looking down on these people or ridiculing them. And as we learn more about Dina's past, we come to respect her for surviving physical and emotional damage that would probably cripple the strongest of us. This is a sometimes challenging but ultimately rewarding documentary.
