Interesting and strange but needed a stronger narrative

'Custom' was a blind watch on Amazon Prime, purely for it's length of 75 mins.Visually I really liked it and, I agree with others, on the mild Lovecraftian vibe with hints of Cronenberg, Lynch & Barker. This is director Tiago Teixeira's debut feature film but I have seen several of his short films before and he definitely has a good eye for framing and strangeness.Where 'Custom' wasn't as successful for me, on first watch at least, was the story. There are some thought provoking ideas presented but none of it really builds to the decent finale that I think the film deserves, it just sort of fizzles out. Also, the best actor is Abigail Hardingham, who plays Harriet, but you see less of her as the film goes on and I think she should have been the main focus.

OnlyFans: VHS Edition

Custom follows Harriet (Abigail Hardingham) and Jasper (Rowan Polonski) a pair of amateur sex workers who make custom porn videos for an online clientele. They receive a high paying assignment which is to be filmed on a VHS camcorder with a strict series of instructions one of which tells them not to play back the recorded footage... well we know they weren't gonna follow that rule.It definitely feels like an homage to Videodrome. That idea of media messing with your sense of reality and control runs through the whole thing. You can tell what it is going for. The film truly gets unsettling when Jasper watches footage he does not remember filming. We the audience are invited to witness what he is seeing and boy is it freaky and it only gets freakier with each subsequent tape.I liked the idea of Jasper trying to piece everything together. I am always into horror where there is some kind of weird media mystery being unraveled, which goes back to classics like Ring but is also evidenced in recent similar films such as Broadcast Signal Intrusion. But here the investigation side falls flat. Things just happen. Tapes start appearing near the end for Jasper to watch even though earlier it is made clear he only kept digital copies for himself and sent the actual tapes off to the client.That also links into one of my bigger issues with the film. It leans too hard on being vague. I do not mind ambiguity and it works in parts, but here it sometimes feels like scenes are unclear just for the sake of it. Films shouldn't have to spell out everything before the end credits roll but here it's kept abstract to the point of frustration.Thankfully making up for these shortcomings is Abigail Hardingham who definitely leaves an impression. The film is pretty open with nudity and if you are a straight guy it is hard not to notice. It fits the raw intimate vibe the film is going for, but at the same time I was not exactly focused on the plot in those moments.Custom is not perfect and it drags a bit in places, but I liked that it sticks to that uneasy psychological kind of horror. It is the kind of film that does not fully explain itself but still sticks in your head after, even if some of that is just wishing it had gone further.

Weird and Unique

If you're looking for a bold and different horror, look no further!Great performances from both leads.Atmospheric, creepy, weird, sexy, cronbergy.It follows Jasper and Harriet starting off as happy go-lucky artists who take up a side gig and find themselves stuck in life until a mysterious video request set them on a deadly path of obession.A whole bunch of us watched it on a movie night and loved it!
