Plot summary

Jill's life has been reduced to nothing more than an on-call prostitute, charged with taking care of the other girls in a corporation's illicit harem. But as her secret pen pal relationship with Winston, a mild mannered park ranger with a violent past, grows into something more sensual, she begins to realize that with his help, she may be able to destroy the evil empire holding her hostage.

Respectable last stand of theatrical hardcore

One of the last hardcore films released theatrically, as much of the adult industry was transitioning to the home video market. And if this was a last stab at legitimacy, then well done. Of the adult films I've watched so far, both from the Golden Age and more recent ones, this felt the most like a "real" movie. The sense is that the sex served the story rather than the other way around. All the technical aspects were quite good, and even the acting was respectable more than just being functional. Tish Ambrose and Eric Edwards were good leads, with Edwards in particular getting to delve into some pretty heavy subject matter, but the standout scene for me was a particularly violent scene between Herschel Savage and Sheri St. Claire. Beyond that, the film was well-paced and had an interesting score. My only real issue was that the entire buildup of the plot was resolved rather perfunctorily in a 5-minute action scene. On the other hand, with a 10-day shoot and a fraction of the budget of a Hollywood picture, it's not like they could have done something on the scale of Rambo. Overall, while I may have been more affected by a couple of the other early 70's titles I've seen so far (e.g., The Devil in Miss Jones), I really enjoyed this one, which bodes well for the other 80's theatrical hardcore I have coming up.

Excellent porn drama

Sadistic businessman J.W. Sheeves (a spot-on slimy portrayal by Robert Kerman) runs a prostitution racket that he uses as a means for corporate blackmail. Complications ensue when mother hen hooker Jill (winningly played with sweet charm by fetching blonde Tish Ambrose) decides to leave Sheeves after falling in love with traumatized Vietnam war veteran Winston Fields (a fine and sensitive performance by Eric Edwards).Writer/director Thomas Paine brings a surprising amount of potent dramatic substance to the meaty story, astutely captures the misery and loneliness of prostitution, keeps the intricate and engrossing narrative moving along at a steady pace, and delivers an exciting rescue set piece at the thrilling climax. This film further benefits from an ace cast of Golden Age porn favorites: Rachel Ashley as the ruthless Morgana, Amber Lynn as the conscience-stricken Tanya, Sheri St. Claire as naive and vulnerable rookie Babette, Herschel Savage as brutish henchman Louis, Harry Reems as the stressed-out and overworked Bill, and Jamie Gillis as sleazy creep Dan (who likes to play baby). The sex scenes are quite arousing and energetic. Tom Denucci's glossy cinematography provides a pleasing polished look. The neatly varied score alternates between elegant piano and pulsating synth. Highly recommended for fans of vintage 80's hardcore fare.
